Today May 29th, 2023, The new president of Africa's largest democracy and economy Bola Ahmed Tinubu was sworn in as the fifth democratically elected president of Nigeria. The ceremony was held in Eagle Square Abuja, Nigeria. This brings to an end the eight-year administration of Muhammadu Buhari.
Tinubu, popularly known as Jagaban in his inaugural speech promised to target higher GDP growth, industrial policy and to make electricity more accessible and affordable to businesses and homes.
He will have little time to celebrate as Nigerians expect swift responses to the challenges the country is faced with. Inflation is at its highest and Nigeria have piling debt running into hundreds of billions, unemployment is on high and the country oil revenue has decreased.
Leaders across the continent including President of South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa, President Paul Biya of Cameroun, Mohamed Bazoum of Niger, Senegal's Macky Sall, and other representatives were at the ceremony.
